Highlights of the Trip
Perge Ruins
PERGE: was an ancient Greek city in Anatolia and the capital of Pamphylia. Today it is a large site of ancient ruins 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) east of Antalya. Located there is an acropolis dating back to the Bronze Age. During the Hellenistic period, Perga was one of the richest and most beautiful cities in the ancient world, famous for its temple of Artemis. St. Paul the Apostle "preached the word" (Acts 14:25) in Perge during his first missionary journey. Perge became one of important centers of early christianity.
Candir Canyon
The Candir (YAZILI) Canyon: It’s a short (~6 km) tranquil valley where a clear, swift flowing river emerges from a steepsided canyon flanked by a well-preserved section of the ancient King’s road (Kral Yolu) which in the 5th century BC stretched from the Aegean coast to Babylon.
Kovada Lake
Kovada Lake National Park: is made up of silent bays and beaches and possesses a fresh atmosphere. It is surrounded by by picturesque forests with oaks, pines and other trees typically found in this region. There are boars and foxes and red squirrels in a countryside almost never touched by mankind.
Egirdir Lake
Egirdir Lake: is one of the most fascinating lakes of Turkey, extending calmly along wide forests covering the foot of the mountains behind. It is an excellent site for relaxing, and offers opportunities for swimming, boating and hiking.
Mevlana Museum
KONYA: is known throughout the world as the home of the WHIRLING DERVISHES who sought to achieve ecstasy and unity with God through controlled trance-like spinning. The most famous building in Konya is the Green Mausoleum of Mevlana Celaleddin (Jalaluddin) Rumi. Rumi is one of the world’s most revered mystical poets. During his lifetime he produced a prolific range of inspiring and devotional poetry which encapsulates the sufi's experience of union with the divine. Even during his lifetime he was noted for his cosmopolitan outlook. His funeral, which lasted 40 days, was attended by Muslims, Jews, Persians, Christians and Greeks. St. Paul preached in Konya, too.
